Decorating An Arch Window

by Nancy

The beautifully rounded glass is a joy to have in any home. This is why arched windows are so popular in many households. However this makes them also a tad difficult to cover them properly. Here are some ideas to decorate your arch window to give additional depth and warmth to any room, as well as enhance the level of privacy.

If your result should be a soft and diffused light, you should go for sheer curtains. If you want instead insulated coverings,
opt for thicker lined blackout curtains. Also you need to decide whether you want full coverage or partial coverage of your arched window. Bedroom and bathroom warrants mostly full coverage, while living rooms and entry ways or halls that have cathedral ceilings or an arched window, you should go for a partial coverage that leaves the upper area uncovered while covering the lower part of your window.

The tools you will need to create your decorative arch window treatments are a drill, a tape measure, a pencil and a level.

To measure for full coverage take the tape measure and make a pencil mark at around 2" coming down from the ceiling on the wall that is above your window. If you have curtain rods with rather big decorative accents on them allow for more space instead. Use your level to make sure that you have straight marks. When installing a central brace also mark with your pencil in the center between the two marks.

measuring an arch windowIf you only want a partial coverage you need to measure the width of the window right below the arch curve. Depending on what you will use, for example a spring-pressure rod, find out the width of the interior casing of your window with a tape measure. For rod hooks mark the location of the rood hooks with the level and tape measure.

If you are installing adjustable spring-pressure rods place the rod within the pencil marks inside your window casing and adjust the ends right until the rod is secure. For hook rods you will need to use a drill to secure the curtain rods right at the spot that you previously marked. If the width of your window is bigger than 3 feet you need to add an additional hook right in the center of the measurement between the two side marks, in the middle. Then place the curtain rod safely across the hooks.
